Four formats, four price points, and a lot of confident nonsense written about which is best.

I sell seeds and powder. I don't sell capsules or standardised extract. Read the following knowing that, and then notice that I'm about to tell you when capsules beat what I sell.

What's the difference between milk thistle seeds, powder, capsules and extract?

Whole milk thistle seed (Silybum marianum) is the raw, unprocessed fruit at 1.5 to 3% silymarin. Powder is the same seed milled. Standardised extract concentrates silymarin to 70 to 80% in capsules. Extract gives a known dose; seed gives whole material with its oil intact.

The core trade is precision against completeness. Everything else follows from that.

How do the four formats compare?

Whole seed and powder sit at 1.5 to 3% silymarin with no stated figure. Capsules of standardised extract reach 70 to 80% with a known milligram dose. Whole seed keeps 24 months and costs least per gram. Extract costs most and doses precisely.

Are whole milk thistle seeds better than capsules?

Not universally. Whole seed delivers the complete silymarin complex plus 20 to 30% fixed oil at the lowest cost per gram, but with no guaranteed figure. Capsules of standardised extract at 70 to 80% silymarin give a known dose, which is what trials use.

Here's the arithmetic that settles most of this argument.

A 200 mg capsule of 80% extract carries about 160 mg of silymarin. Whole seed at 2% silymarin needs roughly 8 grams to match that, which is around two heaped teaspoons. Not impossible. Not nothing either.

Clinical trials use 140 to 420 mg standardised silymarin daily. Hitting the upper end from seed alone would mean roughly 20 grams a day, which is a lot of gritty yogurt.

So: if you have a specific reason to hit a specific milligram number, buy capsules. That's the honest answer, and it costs me a sale.

If you're treating this as a food you add to breakfast, whole seed is the better material and a fraction of the price.

Why would anyone choose seed over a concentrated extract?

Three reasons: the intact oil fraction, the uncharacterised 30% of the complex, and cost. Whole seed is 20 to 30% fixed oil, and dietary fat improves silymarin absorption roughly 2 to 3 fold. Extract removes that oil, then tells you to take it with food.

That third point amuses me. The pharmaceutical formulation industry has spent decades solving silymarin's absorption problem: phytosome complexes, micellar systems, krill oil carriers, spray-dried microparticles with surfactants. A krill oil formulation raised silybin transport across an intestinal barrier by 28% versus plain powder.

What are they all doing? Putting the fat back.

The seed already has fat in it. I'm not claiming ground seed beats a phytosome, because nobody has run that head to head as far as I know. But there's something a bit circular about stripping the oil out of a seed, selling the powder, engineering a lipid delivery system, and selling that too.

The second reason is the ~30% polymeric fraction of silymarin that remains poorly characterised and potentially bioactive. Take purified silybin and you get the molecule we understand. Eat the ground seed and you get the whole thing, including the part nobody's mapped. Whether that matters is genuinely unknown. I lean whole-food. That's a lean, not a fact.

Is milk thistle powder as good as whole seed?

Almost, and the gap is freshness. Powder is the same seed milled, so silymarin content is identical at grinding. But the seed is 20 to 30% fixed oil, and once the coat breaks that oil oxidises. Whole seed keeps 24 months; powder doesn't.

The problem with buying powder isn't the powder. It's the unknown date.

Whole seed in a sealed bag is stable material. Powder was milled at some point by someone, sat in a warehouse for some length of time, and has been slowly oxidising throughout. You'll never know how long. A rancid oil fraction isn't dangerous, it's just degraded.

That said, I'd rather you use milk thistle seed powder daily than own whole seed and never grind it. The best format is the one you'll actually use. A cheap coffee grinder costs twenty dollars and solves this permanently, but only if you'll use it.

Buy whole if you'll grind. Buy powder if you won't. That's the whole decision.

What about cut and sifted milk thistle?

Cut and sifted milk thistle is broken seed, coarser than powder and finer than whole. It gives more surface area than intact seed for water extraction while degrading slower than fine powder. It's the sensible middle ground for tea drinkers without a grinder.

This is an underrated format and I think it's the right answer for more people than realise it.

If you want to brew rather than eat, cut and sifted milk thistle tea seeds, 4 oz beats whole seed outright, because whole seed dropped in water extracts close to nothing. There's a 1 lb bulk bag of the same if you go through it.

Just know the ceiling: silymarin's water solubility is under 50 µg/mL, so no particle size fixes that. The tea article explains what to do about it, and the answer is don't strain.

Does a higher silymarin percentage mean a better product?

No. Absorption, formulation and fat co-ingestion affect how much silymarin reaches your bloodstream more than the label percentage does. A 90% extract with poor bioavailability can deliver less to plasma than a weaker one formulated properly. Only 20 to 50% of an oral dose absorbs.

The percentage measures what's in the bottle. It doesn't measure what's in you.

There's a nastier reason for scepticism. Researchers analysing commercial milk thistle supplements found chemical and microbiological quality poor enough that they suggested it might explain the unsatisfactory and non-reproducible clinical outcomes in the published trials. Some products don't contain what the label says.

Analytical labs can check. Authentic milk thistle holds a stable silybin B to silybin A ratio of roughly 1.58, verified across more than 40 commercial extracts by HPLC. If the ratio's wrong, the product's wrong. You can't run that test at home, which is why supplier trust ends up doing the work the label should.

Which format is cheapest?

Whole seed, by a wide margin. Our 1 lb bag of whole milk thistle seeds is $19.99 and gives roughly 90 to 180 servings at 1 to 2 teaspoons. Capsule products typically cost several times more per gram of plant material.

Per serving, seed lands at pennies. Capsules don't.

But cost per gram is the wrong metric if the two formats aren't doing the same job. Cost per milligram of absorbed silybin would be the right metric, and nobody can calculate it honestly, including me. So treat the price gap as real but not decisive.

So which should you buy?

Buy whole seed if you own or will buy a grinder, you want the oil fraction, you're using this as a daily food, and you're comfortable with a silymarin range instead of a number. This is most people, and it's what I use.

Buy powder if you want the same material without the grinder and you'll get through the bag in a couple of months.

Buy cut and sifted if you want to brew a drink and you're not going to eat grounds.

Buy standardised capsules if you need a specific milligram dose, you're following a protocol, or a clinician asked you to. I don't sell them. Go buy them from someone who tests theirs.

Buy liquid extract if alcohol-based extraction appeals and you want something that dissolves properly, since silymarin extracts far better in alcohol than water.

There's no universal winner. Anyone who says otherwise is selling one format.
